THe post

Student Services Advisers are the first point of contact for Student Services and are responsible for providing a comprehensive information and advice service to students.

The postholder is responsible for providing specialist advice relating to funding and bursaries; accommodation and halls of residence; Disabled Students’ Allowances; travel and transport; and general information. As the workload fluctuates across the academic year, particular challenges are faced in maintaining an appropriate level of organisation and efficiency during busy periods, as well as retaining a clear customer focus.

The Student Services Adviser is responsible for general administrative and clerical duties in support of the Student Services team and the Head of Academic and Student Services. The post holder must ensure that appropriate administrative arrangements are made in respect of all Student Services activities, including maintaining well-organised and efficient offices, and ensuring that all appropriate arrangements are made for student appointments.

Students using the service may be distressed, or worried about their situation or progress, and the postholder needs to be aware of this and treat these students with sensitivity. Much of the information handled by Student Services is of a confidential nature, and the postholder needs to recognise and understand the additional responsibilities this brings.

The diversity of responsibility and the breadth of knowledge necessary to meet the demands of the role necessitate a quick thinker, who thrives on maintaining high standards of operational effectiveness even during times of extremely diverse activity. A calm approach whilst working quickly, accurately and effectively is fundamental to the success of this role.
